Broadway circa 1855 was the greatest shopping street in America. Windowshopping was born on Broadway south of Houston: the area's cast-iron buildings held America's first large plate-glass windows. It was a riot of variety houses, music halls, department stores, and elegant hotels. Showman P.T. Barnum exhibited a fetching female impersonator at #537, now an "Everything Under $10.95" discount store. |
